Colin Smith MD of Comyn Ching

The Trust was very sad to learn that Colin Smith, past MD of Comyn Ching has passed away. Comyn Ching were the oldest company in Seven Dials, established in 1700, and one of the country’s foremost architectural ironmongery companies.

They made the air tight brass tube which was buried with miniature artefacts beneath the Sundial Pillar’s foundations, and also donated the gnomens for the dial faces. Colin also assisted in finding a foundry for our Time Plaques and all their work was gratis. Sadly Comyn Ching is no longer in Seven Dials.

The image is Colin (third from the left) making a speech at the Topping-In ceremony in 1987, together with the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the Mayor of Camden, and the celebrities who donated the miniature objects. The event was kindly sponsored by Taylor Woodrow and followed by a large reception attended by local residents and businesses.

Colin is sadly missed by all of us.
