The five Street History Plaques – Seven Dials, Short’s Gardens, Monmouth Street, Mercer Street and Earlham Street – give an overview of the area as well as information about the fascinating history of the specific street, with illustrations. The material is taken from historian Steve Denford’s research which also informs our People’s Plaques project.
All of the five current street history plaques have been sponsored. We are happy to discuss the posibility of extending the scheme to other streets in the area.
Sponsorship pays for the plaques and makes a contribution to the Trust’s modest running costs.
The plaques' elegant design complements the area's overall public realm theme – much admired and photographed.
Sponsors' names are inscribed on the plaques.
Current sponsors are Shaftesbury plc (Seven Dials plaque); The Mercers' Company (Mercer Street plaque); trustee Anja Saunders (Short's Gardens plaque); CBRE Global Investors (Earlham Street plaque); and an iconic local business has sponsored the plaque for Monmouth Street.
We were delighted to be awarded the London Forum Media Award 2015 (Promoting Local History) for these schemes, which the judges called 'absolutely brilliant and wide ranging'.
